Sacred Sound Journey this weekend!

with Rebecca White Raven and Kevin Guerette, special guests from Ottawa

Date and Time: Sunday, October 15, 1 – 2:30pm

A beautiful and meditative sound experience is coming to the Peterborough community again.  Rebecca and Kevin will provide a sacred soundscape using crystal singing bowls and many other sweet sound healing instruments to help guide us into alignment and allow our inner light to shine.

The evening will start with introductions and group toning of the sacred sound OM. This will help everyone become fully present and centered. We will then relax and release into an intuitive and Spirit directed soundscape of vocals, crystal and Tibetan singing bowls, frame drums, shakers and rattles, cedar flute, tingshaws, steel tongue drum, gongs and more. Experience deep relaxation and dream with the sweet sounds, adding your own voice if you feel called to. We will close with magical french chimes, like floating through a forest of fairies. It will be so lovely and I hope you join us!

Temple Yoga is a synergy of the many offerings that our PLY community specializes in. Amplified by the energy of a full Moon, and anchored in the practice of gratitude, this class will incorporate live mantra music, aromatherapy, and Reiki/ massage, in an levels yoga flow co facilitated by our living yoga community of teachers.

~This class is a fundraiser, your registration fee will be going towards a fund for supporting PLY’s future in this community~

Join us for a weekend immersion in the heart of practice. Located at the beautiful and tranquil Lotus Heart Retreat Centre, less than an hour from Peterborough in the Brighton area, this retreat is for those with all levels of experience with yoga. Chakras are energy centres that may manifest physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and socially/ in relationship. The yoga tradition is seeped in mystical wisdom and teachings that point to a mysterious quality of energy, life force, and being, an essential oneness and presence that is available and within all of us. Chakras are a sort of road map of self awareness and energetic alignment.

This Fall, Angella and I will be taking you on a journey, Chakra Essentials, Aromatherapy and Yoga Journey through the energy centers. Each class dedicated to one of these luminous and mysterious energy centers, starting with the Root, and riding the wave up the central channel to the Crown. Here and there, I will offer a newsletter starring each of these centers… so everyone can have taste of the magic.

Muladhara~ the Root Chakra

Earth. Grounding. Stability. Roots. Family. Home. Physical Body. Self Care. Security. Foundation. Support. Food.

The medicine of the Root Chakra, Muladhara, is earthy and deep, foundational, and physical. The root chakra offers us the gift of grounding, as well as a sense of security and stability. An imbalanced or challenged root chakra may manifest as instability, ungroundedness, physical ailments, lack of sustenance, and challenge in meeting basic needs and self care.

The way I see it, we could all use support for this aspect of ourselves, as the world that we inhabit itself is in a state of flux and instability. With global weather disasters, political instability, war, social injustice, and so much more…. grounding is necessary for all of us. I also believe, that as a society we are in the process of reclaiming our relationships with our bodies and the earth, that there has been a sort of estrangement and disconnect that is in the process of healing. Healthy Root Chakra support may include yoga and physical exercise, nutrition, nature connection, and a welcoming and nourishing home environment. Here is a lil Root Chakra love for you…

Find a place in nature where you can stand with bare feet in a relaxed Tadasana Mountain pose. Root down through the feet and stack knees over ankles, hips over knees, shoulders over hips, while standing both strong and at ease. Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, imagine your roots stretching down deep into Mother Earth. With your next inhale, imagine life force energy rising up from the earth, and with that, feel your spine lengthen and crown rise toward the sky. Open up your senses to sound, sight, taste, touch, and smell… alow a feeling of grounding to arise as you connect with the earth and nature.

Aparigraha…is one of the yamas which make up the first limb of the 8 Limbs of Yoga. The 8 Limbs of Yoga are found in the Yoga Sutras, a set of teachings that were compiled by Sage Patanjali prior to 400 CE. Aparigraha has been on my mind, and in my practice lately. Aparigraha is the practice of non attachment, greedlessness, and letting go of the fruits of our actions. This can mean something different to all of us as we navigate the waters of our changing lives. For myself, Aparigraha has been showing up as a practice in supporting the need to let go of control. Let’s face it. Life throws us curveballs! Things do not always unfold in predictable ways. So how do we deal with this? Can we be graceful in our navigating change, uneasease and the learning times? Can we practice acceptance and willingness to not be graceful at times? Can we turn the challenge into opportunity, without avoiding or skimming over the real and deep stuff?

As multidimensional beings, we have so many opportunities to embrace who we are, and open up to lessons and the blessings, the miracle of each breathe, the miracle of existence, in all of it.

Aparigraha is just one practice/ teaching from the Yoga tradition, that suppports us in living well.

Sacred Space... I am also reflecting on the deep honour that it is to hold space for you. As a Yoga educator, within each class so much can happen for each individual, and it is a true honour to create and uphold a safe and sacred container for the unfolding. I am aware that in many ways, these are unstable times that we live in, and each of us are in need of grounding and nourishment. Our mind/ body/ spirit selves are looking for ways to process what arises for us moment to moment as individuals as well as a collective. Yoga offers resources for processing life; the skills and techniques that we explore in Yoga classes, retreats and trainings support us in how we deal with life outside of the yoga studio.

The science and art of Yoga supports us in imbibing our selves and the world around us as sacred space.

One of my favourite ways to dive in to the art of holding space, and teachings such as Aparigraha, is through our 200 hr Yoga Teacher Training. Whether you are drawn to simply deepening the practice that you love, or sharing it with others, Amrita Living Yoga Teacher Training brings self inquiry and your practice to the next level. There are ever expanding opportunites to share yoga and meditation with people in your communities, the world is so in need of more peace and healing.

I truly believe that transformed individuals make a transformed world.

Happy Summer Solstice

For me, this time of year is some of the most magical. Blooming flowers, longer days, fireflies, swims, berries, and the promise of the months of summer that are ahead. Today I am reflecting on the blessings that surround us. Life brings inevitable challenge, stress, and moments of unease… and yet there is so much wonder and so many blessings in this life. One of my favourite translations of the 1st Yoga Sutra of Patanjali…

Every moment of this life is unfolding, each breath is an opportunity to welcome the mystery. So how can we practice leaning into each moment, to do our best not to harden ourselves in the face of adversity? To be fully here and not striving for the next moment or paining for the past? I read a great article from the amazing Pema Chodron today, you can read it here. Pema is always bringing home such wisdom and clarity. My take away: Learning to watch the habitual tendency to want to close up and tighten around discomfort in life. So, what are practices that create space, that allow room to breathe and be and stay with ourselves and the unfolding moments? What activities bring us more into the moment, and which ones provide more of a short term, or less sustainable relief? Time with loved ones, celebrating together, practices that foster present moment awareness, and self care through yoga, meditation, eating well, being in nature and wellness treatments, are all activities in my life that help me to stay present and easeful. So when life has it’s inevitable troubles, we are ripe for practice. Give thanks for another day. Reach out to a friend or family member. Gather together. Commit to creating space in your life for the practices and activities that nourish you.

As we delight in these long summer days, breathe deeply the wonder and the great mystery of life itself…
